A man is in Huntsville Hospital after the motorcycle he was riding was struck Friday morning by a car driven by a woman accused of driving under the influence.
Ronnie Jack Alisangro, 58, 1612 Broadway St., Florence, was flown to Huntsville. The accident happened just before 11 a.m.
Officials with Huntsville Hospital said Alisangro was still in surgery late Friday afternoon and his condition was unavailable.
Medical officials at the scene said Alisangro had a severe injury to his left leg.
The accident happened at the intersection of Dr. Hicks Boulevard and Tennessee Street.
Florence police Sgt. Chris Ticer said Alisangro was riding a 2009 Yamaha motorcycle and was traveling west when he was struck by a 2010 Chrysler 300 driven by Denna Dionne Noah, 39, 410 West Edison Ave., Muscle Shoals.
Ticer said Noah was not injured, however she was taken into custody and charged with driving while under the influence. The arrest came after she failed a field sobriety test at the scene, police said.
Reports indicate Alisangro was going west on his motorcycle, which officials said he had recently bought.
According to police, it appeared the Chrysler veered into the lane because the collision took place in the inside westbound lane, where Alisangro was riding.
Noah’s car slid 50-75 feet into Tennessee Street after the impact.
The collision was so severe it knocked Alisangro’s boot into the outside west lane of Tennessee Street and caused damage to the left front fender of the car, according to reports.
Emergency personnel with Lauderdale EMS took Alisangro by ambulance to the Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum parking lot where he was transferred to an Air Evac helicopter and flown to Huntsville.
Noah was taken to the Lauderdale County Detention Center after her arrest.
The accident remains under investigation by the Florence Police Department.
