Flame win sectional tournament

Shoals Christian easily won the Class 1A-2A boys golf section tournament Tuesday, shooting 296 to win by 30 shots over Decatur Heritage.

Mars Hill (340) and Lexington (369) also qualified for next week’s sub-state tournament in Huntsville.

Michael Peter led the Flame with a 2-under-par 70, while Ben Wood shot 73.

Chandler Russ finished at 76, John Michael Russell shot 77 and Ike Alexander shot 80 for the Flame. All five players earned all-tournament team honors.

Christopher Lee shot 89 and will play in the sub-state tournament next week as an individual.

Jonathan Marks shot 81 and Paden Henderson 83 for Mars Hill, while Michael Robbins (83) and Alex Beavers (88) paced Lexington.

On Monday, Shoals Christian’s Katelyn Gilmore and Central’s Rachel May qualified for the girls sub-state tournament at Cypress Lakes on Monday.

Class 6A

n Twesmes advance to sub-state: Florence’s Patrick Twesme shot 76 to qualify as an individual for next week’s sub-state tournament at Birmingham Country Club. Twesme had the best round for the Falcons, who finished tied for eighth at 330, at Decatur Country Club.

On Monday, Twesme’s sister Catherine, shot 94 to also qualify as an individual for sub-state play.

Class 5A

n Russellville boys win: Will Bragwell shot a one-under 71 as Russellville won the sectional title at Cherokee Ridge in Arab. Hagen Price added a 75 for the Golden Tigers who totaled a 311 on the day to advance to sub-state play.

Lawrence County finished in sixth place with a 346 behind a 75 from freshman Jesse Childress. Tyler Hogan shot an 81 for the Red Devils. Both Childress and Hogan advance to individual play in sub-state.

Muscle Shoals (347) finished seventh, led by an 84 from Graham Davis.

Class 4A

n Brooks, Haleyville and Wilson advance to sub-state: Paced by freshman Jordan Smith’s 77 and Josh Sanderson’s 80, Brooks shot a 321 to claim second place in the Class 4A, Section 4 Tournament at Blackberry Trail Golf Course.

Ardmore won the section with a 298 total, paced by sophomore Lee Hodges, who shot 5-under-par 67.

Haleyville shot 325 and finished in third position behind Lee Lann’s 73 and Clint Phillips’s 79.

Lane Smith and freshman Adam McCombs each shot 79 to propel Wilson to a fourth-placed 331.

Central shot 340 and Deshler a 352 to finish in fifth and sixth place respectively. Austin Gean (78) of Central and Jacob Devaney (77) of Deshler advanced to sub-state play as individuals.

Softball

Class 1A

n Tharptown, Belgreen advance to regional: Tharptown claimed the Class 1A, Area 13 title with an 8-3 victory over Belgreen.

Braeden Sellers hit a three-run double in the sixth inning to break open a one-run game. Sellers also had an RBI double in the first inning.

Tharptown led 4-0 in the fifth before Belgreen (21-7) cut it to 4-3 on a two-run double by Bridget Thompson and a run-scoring single by Lauren Oliver.

But Sellers keyed a four-run sixth with her double, sending Tharptown to the area title. Both teams advance to play in the regional tournament May 11-12 in Huntsville.

Earlier, Belgreen shut out Hackleburg 7-0 as Laken Bragwell pitched a two-hitter and had two doubles. Thompson had three hits, including two doubles and Erica Smith added a double.

Class 2A, Area 16

n Lexington 4, Colbert Heights 0: Jessie Butler pitched a shutout to lead Lexington to a victory over Colbert Heights in the first round of the Class 2A, Area 16 tournament at Hatton.

Butler scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out three in earning the win.

Lexington scored one run in the top of the first and added three in the third. Butler had a run-scoring single in the third and Haley Gist followed with a two-run double.

Butler led the Golden Bears with two hits. Lexington will play Hatton on Thursday at noon in a winner’s bracket game.

Hatton 2, Mars Hill 0: Hatton scored a pair of unearned runs to advance to the winner’s bracket by blanking Mars Hill.]

Hillary Carpenter pitched a two-hitter for the Hornets. Mallory Spurlock allowed just three hits and struck out seven in taking the loss for Mars Hill.

Mars Hill 11, Cherokee 1: Spurlock recorded eight strikeouts in earning the win over Cherokee.

Abbi Gooch had a two-run double for Mars Hill and Leslie Taylor also drove in two runs.

Mars Hill will play Colbert Heights in an elimination game Thursday at 10 a.m.

Class 3A, Area 16

n Colbert County wins area title: Colbert County (29-5) swept Lauderdale County in back-to-back games, 3-0 and 2-1, to win the Class 3A, Area 16 softball tournament.

Anna Grace Owens pitched complete games in both for the Indians. She allowed three hits and struck out five in the first game before striking out two and giving up four hits in the second.

In the championship game, Taya Beth Sockwell doubled before Sydnie Brown singled her in for the go-ahead run in the fifth.

Alexis Bates’ RBI singled scored

first for the Indians in the first inning, before Lauderdale County tied it in the third.

Whitney Parker and Brown each had two hits for Colbert County in the second game.

Both teams advance to the regional tournament May 11 in Huntsville.

n Lauderdale County 5, Rogers 3: Ashley Jackson drove in a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Lauderdale County (28-13) came from behind to eliminate Rogers.

Kayla Dison collected three hits and an RBI for the Tigers, while Rebekah Whitt and Karlee Brown each added two hits and an RBI.

Haley Barclay struck out four in four innings for the win.

In the 2-1 loss to Colbert County, Rebekah Witt had two hits to lead Lauderdale County (28-13).
