A Florence teenager, who admitted to huffing compressed air in a can, is in jail after he lead law enforcement from three departments on a chase through downtown Florence and into a residential area of Sheffield before crashing into a house Thursday night, authorities said.

“No one got hurt, amazingly,” Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray said.

Trevor Mark Davidson, 19, 744 W. Lakeside Drive, is charged with attempting to elude police, carrying a concealed weapon, driving while under the influence, reckless endangerment, attempting to elude by any means, reckless driving and resisting arrest, police said.

Florence police said Davidson faces multiple traffic citations as well as other charges in Florence city court.

Reports indicate the chase began about 9:15 p.m. when police were called to the parking lot of Alpine Village Apartments on Chisholm Road in regards to a man with a gun.

When officer Jeff Redcross arrived, reports indicate he parked behind the car that Davidson was in and was told that it was Davidson who had the gun.

Police said when Redcross went to the car to talk with Davidson, he reached under the driver’s seat and then put the car in reverse, backing into the patrol car.

As he left the parking lot, the vehicle hit a parked car. Davidson then led police on a chase through north Florence into downtown Florence, police said.

“During the pursuit, (Davidson) almost hit several cars and almost caused a number of wrecks,” Florence police Sgt. Ryan Fleming said.

The chase, which involved Florence officers and state troopers, crossed O’Neal Bridge into Sheffield.

Sheffield officials said Davidson turned onto Hatch Boulevard and was driving at a high rate of speed through residential areas.

After turning onto 12th Avenue, he started weaving in and out of streets and eventually police lost him.

Officers said while they were looking for his car — a 2005 Suzuki Forenza — Davidson wrecked while trying to turn onto Austin Avenue.

He knocked down a street light pole, ran through a yard and the car then flipped on it’s side and ended up on the front porch of the residence at 801 Austin Avenue.

The property owners said they heard tires screeching then heard the streetlight pole snap before feeling a thud against their house.

Authorities said Davidson got out of the car and ran before officers caught him.

Ray said the chase had been terminated after police lost sight of Davidson.

“But he continued to drive recklessly,” the chief said. “He was bound and determined for something to happen and it did. He was looking for a place to wreck with everything he was doing.”

While being treated by medical personnel, police said Davidson admitted he had been huffing cans of air duster and had been talking about suicide. He said he had inhaled six cans of the air duster earlier that evening and one while trying to get away from police.

Authorities said police found 24 cans of air duster in his car along with a .38-caliber pistol.

Narcotic agents said huffing involves breathing in the gas from the compressed air.

“It gives you an instant head rush, a high,” said Curtis Burns, director of the Colbert County Drug Task Force. “Whether it’s gasoline, spray paint, air duster or glue, it has some very harsh and lasting effects.”

Ray said high-speed chases are not commonplace in Sheffield.

“When you do have them you want them to end as quickly as possible,” the chief said. “We don’t have spike strips but this is a situation where they would have come in handy and maybe I need to consider getting some for our department just in case something like this happens again.”

Davidson is being held in the Sheffield City Jail on bail totaling $4,000.
