UNA pitcher Chad Boughner leads conference in victories among other categories.

BIRMINGHAM -- The University of North Alabama has placed six players on the 2012 All-Gulf South Conference baseball team.

The selections are led by first-team selections Chad Boughner and Michael Schmidt. They were joined by second-team picks Josh Cyr, Josh Carpenter, Jake Sloan and Josh Doyle.

Boughner, a junior pitcher from Florence, is the league’s only 10-game winner and leads the GSC in innings pitched (92), strikeouts (104), wins (10) and lowest opponents batting average against him (.199).

He won his last eight consecutive starts of the regular season and in the process broke the UNA record for career strikeouts (211) and tied the mark for career wins (25).

Schmidt, a senior second baseman, is ranked among the league leaders in virtually every offensive category. He is batting .369 with seven home runs, 34 runs batted in and 51 runs scored. He has 28 extra-base hits this season and is third in the GSC in total bases. He was a first-team All-GSC pick in 2011 as well.

Cyr, a junior first baseman from Huntsville, leads the GSC in home runs (10) and is second in runs batted in with 48. He was GSC Freshman of the Year in 2010 and was a second-team All-GSC selection in 2011.

Carpenter, a junior shortstop from Huntsville, earned All-GSC recognition for a second straight year. He was GSC Freshman of the Year in 2011 and a second-team All-GSC pick as well. This season he is batting .309 with 32 runs scored and 36 runs batted in.

Sloan, a senior designated hitter from Amory, Miss., is the third leading hitter in the GSC with a .371 average. He has six home runs and 36 RBI. Sloan was selected second-team All-GSC and first-team All-GSC in 2011.

Doyle, a junior outfielder from Hartselle, has been an offensive and defensive force for the Lions all season. Batting in the No. 2 spot, he leads the league in sacrifice bunts (19), is second in stolen bases (29) and is fourth in runs scored (44).

UNA is 36-14 overall and opens play in the 2012 conference tournament at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Valdosta State.
